In recent years, pole dancing has become not only a hip exercise craze but also the modern equivalent of Tupperware parties with organizers selling poles instead of bowls. Suburban housewives invite instructors into their homes to bust a move in front of their friends. The trend has sparked another debate over women using their bodies to become “empowered.” Sam Weller’s Bookstore’s Jennifer Nielsen thinks the parties are harmless—as long as the participants don’t necessarily think they are somehow better than women who strip for a living.
