You have to hand it to Rich DeVos: the man thinks big.
Forget about starting Amway with partner Jay Van Andel, launching an $8.2 billion global empire and leading the Butterworth-Blodgett merger.
Those would be warm-ups if DeVos pulls off his goal of reuniting the Christian Reformed Church with the Reformed Church in America.
DeVos aims to do what neither God, man nor woman has done since the two denominations split in 1857 over ... well, that's the point. Almost no one knows or cares anymore.
"I think that they've been separate for too long, and not with any good reasons anymore," DeVos, 83, said recentlymarking Amway's 50th anniversary. "That's one little thing I'd like to do yet."
He sought to soften his comments somewhat later in the week. An associate said DeVos is willing to put resources into the effort but hasn't hired anyone for it.
"He just has a deep desire for this unity to be achieved in some way in his lifetime," said Ginny Vander Hart, an RDV Corp. executive.
I love that DeVos sees this reuniting as a "little thing." We're talking about more than 525,000 people, and 2,000 churches, with separate staffs, seminaries, colleges and rival basketball teams.
Why do billionaires always get involved in things that are clearly beyond them? Stick to air purifiers and cosmetics Mr. Devos!

Someone needs to retire this old fart. He is just too silly for me. I don't understand why he things it is necessary to mend the fences of these two churches and why he thinks he has to facilitate the merger. I think if the churches desire unification, then they should make plans to do such, but someone get this old guy and his opinions and put him out to pasture already.
