Mommies vs. the FTC

Mommies vs. the FTC

Posted on 11. Dec, 2009 by Dan Mitchell.

Here's an interesting article about the FTC and pay-to-praise blogging:

Even for someone who gets blessed with free washers and dryers, semiannual boondoggle trips to Los Angeles, New York and Florida, and all the organic yogurt drinks she can consume, $11,000 is a lot of money. For mommy bloggers, Tweeters and Facebookers who post opinions about consumer products, $11,000 is the size of the fine they allegedly might incur for failing to follow the government's disclosure rules on advertising and endorsing.

According to recently revised Federal Trade Commission guidelines, bloggers and other word-of-mouth advertisers are now subject to FTC rules for advertisers and "endorsers" -- anyone who recommends a commercial product or service. Repeated violations of those rules could result in court-ordered monetary penalties. These new additions to the FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising went into effect Dec. 1, and for many participants in the sometimes-lucrative world of social-media-for-pay, the fear is in the air.

Welcome To The New and Improving MLM Blog

It took a little longer than expected to move and we are still working out the kinks but it appears as though we had a relatively smooth move from Typepad to Wordpress.

Thank you for your patience over the last couple of days.

Nearly 6 years ago, I launched MLMBlog.net thinking, "if I could get a couple of people to read what I write, that would be cool".

When the site went down, I got emails from Network Marketers all over the world including respected leaders like Mike Dillard and Bo Short.  Mike adds so much value to the Network Marketing industry and he was genuinely concerned about my site, asking me if everything is "OK".

So stay tuned and watch this space as we continue to improve the look and performance of the MLM Blog.

Warmest -

Mary Kay consultant scores fourth pink Cadillac

Posted on 18. Aug, 2009 by Dan Mitchell.

From OC Register:

Marykay rep with car..I'm gonna get me a Cadillac too, if it's the last thing I do —
Stray Cats song that plays on Patricia Schneider's answering machine.

I don't wear makeup (unless I'm going somewhere fancy) so the idea of selling it, doesn't appeal to me. But the idea of someone giving me a free pink Cadillac does.

It always sounded like some kind of urban legend though: So there was this lady who sold so much makeup, they gave her a pink Cadillac.

But no, it turns out Mary Kay really does hand out pink Cadillacs, because this is a story about a woman who got not one, but four.

And to hear her tell it, it wasn't all that tough.

Although she is one of only 11 Mary Kay reps in The OC driving a pink Cadillac, so don't get too excited, ladies.

•••

Patricia Schneider graduated from Thousand Oaks High in 1986 and set out to become a beauty pageant queen and movie star.

She was crowned Miss Conejo Valley 1987 and Miss Studio City in '88 and then Miss Century City in '89. All three titles sent her to the Miss California U.S.A. Pageant, and the last two times she made it to the top 15 finalists, but her dream stopped there.

During her reigns, she worked various jobs – a clerk at a law firm, a fit model for bathing suits and bridal gowns; traveling to car shows as a Buick spokesmodel, opening car doors and trunks and showing off features.

She also landed a role playing volleyball pro Sinjin Smith's girlfriend in the 1990 beach volleyball movie "Side Out." And she played Mandy, the principal killed by a tractor combine (you might remember her coughing up a bucket of fake blood) in the 1988 slasher movie "Hollow Gate."

But, Patricia says, she got more propositions than parts. "The casting couch was alive and well when I was there."

Around the time she was beginning to realize Hollywood "was not the place for me," she met a Mary Kay rep at an acting class in Burbank.

Georgie drove a pink Cadillac. She told Patricia that Mary Kay gave it to her. And she invited Patricia to stop by her house one night to be the model for a makeup party.

At the time, Patricia was driving a Toyota Celica with 150,000 miles on it. "I thought, 'Wow, I could really use a free car.'"

But she doubted she'd fit in. "I thought it was old lady makeup."

From goldcoast:

Arbonne Rep Working with stars such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Heath Ledger and Michael Caine has had its perks  but few could rival the one Gold Coast make-up artist Maree Claire Stuart will receive next week.

A make-up artist in the US film industry for 17 years, Stuart is to be presented with a white Mercedes Benz for 12 months' work as the vice president of Arbonne, a Swiss-developed skin care and make-up range.

The car is a reward for helping introduce Arbonne to the Australian market. Stuart will get the keys next Tuesday at Grand Motors Prestige in Robina.

While she's worked with many stars, Stuart says working with Arbonne has been a rewarding experience.

Prepaid Legal Services backs Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson Campaign

Posted on 29. Jun, 2009 by Dan Mitchell.

By Dan Mitchell, MLM Blog Correspondent

From Tulsaworld:

Pre-Paid Legal TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma Ethics Commission filings show more than half the early contributions to Attorney General Drew Edmondson's gubernatorial campaign have been from private-practice lawyers and law firms.

Edmondson had received $357,000 from those sources through March 31, the end of the most recent filing period. About $45,000 came from lawyers and employees associated with Ada-based Prepaid Legal Services and about $34,000 was from attorneys and employees of the firm Riggs, Abney, Turpen, Orbison & Lewis.

Edmondson, who opened a campaign account in 2007, has brought in nearly three times as much contributions as the other three announced candidates combined. They didn't open campaign accounts until this year.

Filings show Lt. Gov. Jari Askins and U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin have raised more than $100,000 each, while state Sen. Randy Brogdon has brought in more than $22,000.

The next filing deadline is July 31.
