For years, I have been recommending that bloggers always add an image to their blog posts, but images might be more important today than ever before.

Let’s look at some statistics and data about images:

  1. Facebook Posts with images get 87% more engagement.
  2. Twitter tweets with images get 18% more clicks, 89% more favorites, and 150% more re-tweets.
  3. Image search can be a major source of traffic. (20 to 60% of all traffic from Google)
  4. Blog posts with images every 100 words or so get the most shares across platforms.

I’m going to dive a little deeper into number 5:

High-quality cell phone cameras and the Millennial Generation are driving an explosion of pictures.

The peak of film cameras took place in 1999 when 70 million film cameras were sold and consumers around the world took 80 billion pictures.

Estimates suggest that over 1 Trillion pictures were taken in 2015.

More than 20 times more devices that take pictures were sold in 2015 (1.4 billion) vs 1999 (70 million).

Snapchat is the fastest growing Social Network while Instagram has passed Twitter in users and dwarfs them in revenue.  Both Snapchat and Instagram are heavily driven by pictures and video.

All this to say that a large group (the largest actually) of people are very focused on images.

Images are really important when you share your content on Facebook and Twitter.  Don’t publish a blog post without a great image.

The image in this post was created with free tool called Canva.

  1. I never used images in the past in my blog posts, but I do know. People love pictures. I just use powerpoint to make JPEG files that I can turn into pictures. My only piece of advice would be “don’t steal other people’s pictures.” That’s a quick way to get in trouble. Get a decent camera, take your own pictures, and be unique. Just my two cents.

  2. Good post! I do agree with you that pictures are a major factor in content marketing and even the statistics show that. Keep up the good work and I wish you all the best.-Chris Thompson

  3. of course some people prefer seeing than reading and when images are not included in a blog post, chances are high that such people just by pass.
It is really a good idea shared here. all bloggers should read it and adjust accordingly.

  4. Great post, Ty! Images definitely grab attention amidst a wall full of text, and even certain images will grab attention amidst other images. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

  5. I also use Canva’s Twitter post layout, but text many times is cut off and does not fit perfectly when scrolling on my page. Which dimension are you using for your posts that always have easily readable text in your feed without the need to click?
