Avon Welcomes New CEO After Failed Takeover

Avon Welcomes New CEO After Failed Takeover

Growth appears to have slowed at Avon and I’m not sure how a Johnson & Johnson executive with no Direct Sales experience will be able to right the ship.

Avon is hoping a new CEO can give it a much-needed makeover.

The struggling cosmetics seller on Monday tapped long-time Johnson & Johnson executive Sherilyn S. McCoy as its new chief executive. The announcement ended a four-month search to replace embattled CEO Andrea Jung, who had come under fire for failing to stem the company’s declines and wrap up a bribery investigation.

Avon Products Inc. said Jung – the first female CEO of the 126-year-old company – will remain executive chairman after McCoy takes over later this month. Shares of the New York-based company fell more than 3 percent Monday.

McCoy’s emergence at Avon comes less than two months after she was passed over for the top spot at Johnson & Johnson, which in February announced that Alex Gorsky would take over as CEO. Bill Weldon, who has served as J&J’s chief executive for the past decade, plans to step down at the company’s annual shareholder meeting April 26.

The announcement from Avon comes just a week after the company rejected a $10 billion takeover offer from the smaller beauty products maker Coty Inc.

Founded in 1886, Avon became a fixture in households across the country as its legions of “Avon ladies” went door to door selling makeup to family, friends and acquaintances. Its brands include Avon Color, Skin-So-Soft and mark.

The company markets its products in more than 100 countries through about 6.4 million independent sales representatives. Its annual revenue is more than $11 billion.

But North American sales have dropped off over the years and about 80 percent of Avon’s $11 billion in annual revenue now comes from overseas. The company has frequently missed analysts’ earnings expectations and posted weak sales in some of its largest markets.

LifeVantage Has Record Quarter

LifeVantage Has Record Quarter

Publicly traded MLM company LifeVantage has posted a record quarter in sales:

Douglas C. Robinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of LifeVantage, stated, “Our record second fiscal quarter revenue and operating income, combined with the doubling of our operating margins, underscore our ability to achieve leverage in our business while making strategic investments. We plan to continue to strengthen our infrastructure by adding headcount for all areas of our business and increasing our marketing investments as we build the necessary platform to continue our profitable organic growth.”

“As awareness and understanding about Protandim and LifeVantage TrueScience(R) Anti-Aging Cream continues to expand in consumer markets as well as among medical professionals, we believe that our business is positioned for continued long-term growth. We are seeing a growing number of distributors join our team, as evidenced by record attendance at our recent quarterly distributor convention. We look forward to building upon this positive momentum and delivering another record year for LifeVantage in fiscal 2012.”

I am always a little on edge about public companies because of the need to “serve two masters”.  Public companies must show profit and growth for the shareholders and sometimes that can come at the expense of hard working associates.

I didn’t immediately see what percentage of sales is actually paid back to the distributor force, but if you can find that number, it will be a good indicator of whether or not LifeVantage is a viable long term business.

I would look for 40 to 50% payout.  That number would typically be able to keep a company solvent and profitable while still offering a lucrative opportunity to the field.

95% Oxygen Goes MLM with Oxygen4Energy!

Oxygen4Energy recently launched their Network Marketing program promoting the hottest new oxygen supplement – portable canisters of 95% oxygen enriched air. The product is inhaled through the mouth or nose, and the oxygen enters your bloodstream in seconds. It’s like having your own little oxygen bar with you at all times!

The main target market for the product is sports and fitness because it is SO effective at improving athletic performance and reducing recovery times. However, the product also appeals to several other huge markets including: seniors & elderly, hangovers, stress, brain function, and altitude acclimation.

According to Oxygen4Energy’s president, “This is the perfect product for network marketing. It is a completely new concept in oxygen supplementation that truly sells itself. The benefits appeal to a very large percentage of the population, with most people experiencing the benefits the very first time they use the product. Since it requires a lot of education to use effectively, large retail chains are resistant to carrying it. This means that customer loyalty will be high for our distributors.”

Oxygen4Energy is in pre-launch, offering free membership for the 1st year with any product purchase, and plans to be ready for an official launch in January 2011. Its product does not compete with other nutrition based programs, so it might be a great add-on profit center to existing downlines.

7 Resources For Highly Effective MLM Bloggers

7 Resources For Highly Effective MLM Bloggers

Okay…honestly, there’s more than 7 resources I use on a daily basis here at the MLM Blog. I used the 7 in the title because I was reading about the power of 7 in list posts over at Copyblogger this morning. Copyblogger is a great resource!

Here’s 7 resources for highly effective MLM bloggers I use on a daily basis here at MLM Blog -  for inspiration, research and promotion.

#1 Google

Sure, Google is great for search and allows you to find anything you want in an instant. This morning I was looking for a laugh and found this: We Dare You Not to Laugh at 31 Foods With Misspelled Names. I laughed. LMAO. But Google’s not just a search engine.

Google and the various tools they provide are invaluable for bloggers. Google Alerts is one tool I use everday. Google Alerts allows you to monitor the Web for content based on keywords and emails you the results. I have Google Alerts set up to notify me when 100s of different MLM companies are mentioned. But be careful – Google alerts can fill up an inbox pretty quick. I use a separate email account like and go through them once every day or two.

Another great Google tool is Google Reader. Google Reader allows you an aggregated view of all the RSS feeds you subscribe to in one location. Great time saver.

Still another great Google tool is Google Insights. With Google Insights you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties. Great for research!

2. Compete & Quantcast

Another great tool for research is Quantcast. Also an essential tool if you are doing any paid advertising to promote your blog. Another great research tool along the same lines is Compete.

3. TweetDeck (or HootSuite)

You definitely need a tool like TweetDeck or HootSuite if you’re going to leverage Twitter to promote your blog. We use Twitter to promote the MLM Blog everyday. You can also use a service like TwitterFeed to set up automatic tweets when you update your blog. TwitterFeed will even update your Facebook page as well.

4. Coffee (or Tea)

I just find blogging is more fun with a nice warm beverage.

5. Facebook

Get a Facebook Fan Page set up to promote your blog. Do it now. Let us know if you need some help.

6. Books

Books are a great inspiration for posts and especially Blog post Titles. I’m a book lover – over 10,000 books in and around my home office – and just gazing around now I can see multiple book titles that I could spin into colorful blog posts: The Way Things Work, Let Sleeping Vets Lie, Misadventures of a Fly Fisherman, The Human Factor. Reading anything and everything I can get my hands on is a constant inspiration for blog posts.

7. OPB

OPB stands for Other People’s Blogs. The best way to improve as a blogger is read other people’s blogs. For example, this post was inspired by John Paul Aguiar’s Money Dummy blog and his post entitled Blogging Tools That Successful Bloggers Use Daily.

Don’t forget to check out the new MLM Blog Page on Facebook and “Like” us to win $500 advertising dollars here on the MLM Blog.

Study Links Red Bull and Heart Trouble?

Study Links Red Bull and Heart Trouble?

The Times:

Red Bull may claim to “give you wings” but drinking too much of the popular energy drink may also lead to heart damage, a study suggests.

A study of 30 university students aged between 20 and 24 years old found that drinking just one 250ml sugar-free can of the caffeinated energy drink increased the “stickiness” of the blood and raised the risk of blood clots forming.

Using tests to measure blood pressure and the state of blood vessels around the body, the Australian researchers said that after drinking one can participants had shown a cardiovascular profile similar to that of someone with heart disease.

Red Bull today emphatically denied that the drink, which is distributed to 143 countries worldwide, was dangerous. In a statement, it said that Red Bull had been proved safe by “numerous scientific studies”, and that it had never been banned from anywhere it had been introduced.

Scott Willoughby, of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide University, said that he was alarmed at the results, and suggested that older adults who already have symptoms of heart disease should refrain from drinking too much of the energy drink.

Amway Global partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Amway Global partners with Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Amway Global announced today that it will partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to help build seven community gardens across the United States. The Amway Global Positive Sprouts project mobilizes volunteers and incorporates the gardening expertise of the Green Education Foundation (GEF) to teach kids how to start and maintain their own edible gardens. An accompanying curriculum will educate youngsters about nutrition, organic gardening practices, and cooking from the garden.

"Connecting with the community to improve the lives of today’s youth is what this program is all about," said Steve Lieberman, Managing Director of Amway Global. "By creating fun, yet educational activities, our goal is to leverage our expertise as a health and wellness company to teach kids about the importance of incorporating fruits and vegetables into their diet."

This is the first initiative of a three-year commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. This project aligns with Amway Global’s efforts to help raise public awareness about the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle. Amway Global is the #1 online health and beauty retailer in America, and its NUTRILITE® brand is the world’s leading seller of vitamin, mineral and dietary supplements, based on 2009 sales.

While this is the first national relationship with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Amway Global has partnered with several local Boys & Girls Clubs of America dating back to 1948. The partnership is only one of the ways the AMWAY ONE BY ONE CAMPAIGN FOR CHILDREN® program helps disadvantaged children through hands-on engagement and financial support. Since 2003, the AMWAY ONE BY ONE CAMPAIGN FOR CHILDREN has donated more than $112 million to children’s causes, touching the lives of 7 million children.

Amway Corporation Announces Strategic Adjustments

Amway Corporation Announces Strategic Adjustments

It seems like Europe and Asia likes the "American Way" more than Americans. They don’t mention specific numbers but it looks like a bunch of American employees will soon lose their jobs at Amway as part of their strategic adjustment.

Amway Corp. today announced a series of changes to its supply chain structure aimed at improving the global direct selling leader’s competitive position.

“More than 80 percent of our customers buy our products outside the United States, and Amway needs to update its supply chain to reflect that,” said Amway chairman Steve Van Andel. “As part of our long-term strategy, we are moving some production closer to customers to cut supply times and significantly reduce shipping-related costs. Some of these steps are difficult, but they will help us drive long-term growth and sustain existing jobs in all our markets.”

Through 2013:

* Amway will move production of several smaller product lines to Europe and Asia, reducing supply time and cost.
* Most production of air treatment and water treatment systems will move to Asia by 2013, where the vast majority of those products are sold. Similarly, production of some home care products will shift closer to high-demand markets in Europe and Asia.
* The company will consolidate activities at two North American facilities and move some of their functions to other California and Michigan locations.
