Study Links Red Bull and Heart Trouble?

Red Bull may claim to “give you wings” but drinking too much of the popular energy drink may also lead to heart damage, a study suggests.

A study of 30 university students aged between 20 and 24 years old found that drinking just one 250ml sugar-free can of the caffeinated energy drink increased the “stickiness” of the blood and raised the risk of blood clots forming.

Using tests to measure blood pressure and the state of blood vessels around the body, the Australian researchers said that after drinking one can participants had shown a cardiovascular profile similar to that of someone with heart disease.

Red Bull today emphatically denied that the drink, which is distributed to 143 countries worldwide, was dangerous. In a statement, it said that Red Bull had been proved safe by “numerous scientific studies”, and that it had never been banned from anywhere it had been introduced.

Scott Willoughby, of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide University, said that he was alarmed at the results, and suggested that older adults who already have symptoms of heart disease should refrain from drinking too much of the energy drink.

Producers of Tahitian noni fruit have raised concerns about a fall in demand for their produce. Although Tahiti has a reputation as producing the Pacific region's best, most nutritious noni fruit – high labour and production costs mean it's also far more expensive than that of its neighbours. Now the producers are claiming that noni from other countries such Fiji, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands is being used in juice carrying the Tahitian label.

Noni juice is said to benefit everything from your digestion system, immune system and even skin and hair. And while those claims are often disputed, no one can argue with the fact that in the last decade noni-juice has become a multi-million dollar industry. Worldwide sales of noni juice reportedly add up to several billion US dollars a year.

At the forefront of this success is the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the first of the Pacific Islands to tap into the international market. However, with demand for local noni fruit falling, producers suspect that many companies maybe be using cheaper fruit imported from other Pacific Islands.

The CEO of the noni producer and exporter, Royal Tahiti Noni, Vatea Quesnot, says he saw this happen several years ago with juice sold in the United States and thinks it may now be happening on the Asian market.

Tupperware Globe Just when I was about to take a vacation boating down a Missouri river with my Tupperware collection!

(Jefferson City, MO) — You may want to rethink taking Tupperware along with you on Missouri's rivers.  That's at least for the time being.
   
The Associated Press says state lawmakers have banned it, but not on purpose.  They apparently meant to vote on outlawing Styrofoam, but confused their plastics.
   
The problem came up because Styrofoam is a brand name, so lawmakers tried to name the plastic used to make foam coolers.  Now having Tupperware on a river can land you in jail for a year.
   
No word about a repeal of that law.

It's Mangosteen harvest time where I live in Chiangmai, Thailand. Mangosteen is about 40 cents US a kilo. Not sure why you'd buy Xango – but that's just me.  I'd have to say, however, that Corey Citron is one of the most dynamic networkers around.

Here's the latest Xango news from btimes:

Xango_logo XANGO, which offers mangosteen juice products with nutritional benefits, aims to double its sales growth in Malaysia over the next two years.

Its general manager of Southeast Asia, Tai Tolman, said despite the current global economic crisis, there are still opportunities for growth and the company will leverage on its network of distributors.

"Through efforts by our distributors to educate the public on the powerful antioxidant properties present in XanGo products, we intend to expand our presence nationwide from our strong base in the Klang Valley," Tai said.

"Currently, XanGo has 30,000 distributors in Malaysia and we intend to double that number to support the growing demand for our products," he said in a recent interview.

At the global level, XanGo has one million distributors in various markets, including Canada, Mexico, Japan and Germany.

According to Tai, the Malaysian market has enjoyed a 328 per cent revenue growth rate since May 2007.

He said XanGo has achieved remarkable success for its flagship juice product in Malaysia, which is being retailed at RM160 per bottle.

"The Malaysian market is significant for XanGo, being one of the largest markets for us in Asia and the regional office hub for Southeast Asia," he added.

Sources at The Other Side have learned that Tomas Scheckter's big announcement tomorrow is in fact not what people are expecting.

People
around the country are waiting on Tomas to announce either his part
time or full time entry into the Indycar Series for the rest of 2009
with either Dreyer & Reinbold Racing or Dale Coyne Racing. However,
we have learned that Mr. Scheckter will do just the opposite.

"He's
done, he has found a new passion and we can't figure out why" said a
source who asked to remain anonymous since nothing has been announced
yet. "It is like that Monavie stuff has brainwashed him. He went into a
meeting with the founder of Monavie with a Monavie Gel in hand, and
walked out of the meeting a different person."

Monavie acai juice berries Tomorrow,
Tomas will announce that he is taking a short hiatus from racing to
pursue his new goal, being the top Monavie Salesman in North America.

Apparently,
part of his deal to run the Indianapolis 500 included him becoming a
key distributor and salesman of Monavie products. As you can see above,
Tomas was a walking billboard for the start up company during the last
week of May as he pushed Monavie on everyone.

Further
evidence of his decision to leave racing for the foreseeable future hit
Twitter earlier today as Tomas was advertising job openings in his
distribution team through tweets.

With all the pressure and attention over the Big 2 Colas out there, it
is pretty surprising that there are not more energy drink colas on the
market. Other than a very select few, most energy drinks seem to shy
away from cola profiles. I think it is because it is the one flavor
where the customer can be very discerning, and even non-soda drinkers
can have a particular cola preference.

I am so glad Amway took this
on and created their own energy cola – as this flavor is pretty dang
good – both in energy and in flavor. While I have certainly had tastier
colas, I don't think I have had one this powerful. A big thanks goes
out to energy drink heaven for finding and sending me this drink.

I
was pretty impressed with Cola Blast, tasting a whole lot like regular
diet soda, albeit with a bit of a herbal/medicinal edge to the
aftertaste. Cola is not that easy to pull off, and XS does it well. The
sweetness of the drink really stood out for me, as it tastes very crisp
and had a much sweeter flavor than Diet Coke, diet Pepsi or Coke Zero.
This could probably be associated to their use of sucralose and Ace-K
instead of Coke and Pepsi's use of Nutrasweet. You can taste the very
heavy herbal formula they add in here – giving the drink a strong bite
that you don't normally taste in colas. While not nearly as good as a
Red Bull Cola, Cola Blast does fare nicely.

Rising U.S. sales of acai, a purple Amazon berry promoted as a "superfood" on Oprah Winfrey's Web site, are depriving Brazilian jungle dwellers of a protein-rich nutrient they've relied on for generations.

U.S. consumers are turning a "a typical poor people's food into something like a delicacy," said Oscar Nogueira, who specializes in the fruit at Embrapa, Brazil's agricultural research company.

Spending on acai-based products by Americans seeking to lose weight, gain energy or slow aging doubled to $104 million last year, according to SPINS, a Schaumburg, Illinois-based market research firm. Since U.S. demand took off early this decade, the fruit's wholesale price in Brazil has jumped about 60-fold, Embrapa data show.

In 2008, exports from Para, the South American country's main producing state, climbed 53 percent to account for about a quarter of output, according to the local government. Production, though, has increased little in the past five years.

Winfrey, 55, discussed the berry with Mehmet Oz on her TV talk show in February 2008, when the New York cardiologist presented his "anti-aging checklist." It includes acai, blueberries and tomatoes.
"It has twice the antioxidant content of a blueberry," said Oz, 48.

Winfrey's site publishes dermatologist Nicholas Perricone's "10 Superfoods List," which includes the Brazilian fruit. Meriden, Connecticut-based Perricone, 60, sells skin-care items and food supplements, including a powder that contains the berry, according to his Web page.

Oz declined to be interviewed for this article. Perricone didn't reply to e-mail and telephone requests for comment.
