NEWARK, OHIO — The Longaberger basket company has named Robin Crossman its new president to take over for Tami Longaberger, who has been serving as president for about two years.

The central Ohio-based Longaberger Co. announced the appointment Thursday. Tami Longaberger will continue as chairwoman and chief executive.

Crossman has worked in marketing, sales, branding and logistics in the direct-sale industry for more than 20 years, holding leadership roles at both family-owned and start-up companies.

The handmade basket-maker has about 2,000 employees. It sells items through 45,000 independent home consultants.

Avon does more than just sell makeup. The Avon Foundation recently gave a $750,000 grant to the Emory Winship Cancer Institute and the Avon Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The grant, which is part of Campaign Emory’s $1.6 billion fund-raising effort, will be used sponsor staffing, research and community outreach education and clinical programs.

The Avon Foundation has given about $11 million to Emory Winship and Grady since 2000. The Center at Grady must apply for the grant each year.

The Avon Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center, which opened in 2003, is one of eight Avon breast centers in the country and is meant to help “under-served” residents of Dekalb and Fulton counties, according to Sheryl Gabram-Mendola, director of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady and principal investigator for the Avon grant.

The grant has helped increase the number of biopsies, mammograms and ultrasounds from 11,000 in 2005 to 16,000 this past year. Also, about 20 percent more patients have visited the center in the past year than in 2005.

“The program has grown very quickly,” Gabram-Mendola said.

The Mary Kay Foundation`s annual shelter grant giving program awarded $3 million in total grants to 150 domestic violence shelters in all 50 states. Each shelter received a $20,000 grant to help combat domestic violence, educate local communities, provide much needed shelter and rehabilitation for survivors and keep shelters open during the current economic downturn. In light of the economy, the Foundation is reinforcing its commitment to help bring an end to domestic violence, especially in a time when donations are down and the need for services is on the rise.

In May 2009, "Mary Kay`s Truth About Abuse" survey of domestic violence shelters across the country revealed some alarming results: three out of four domestic violence shelters report an increase in women seeking assistance from abuse since September 2008, a major turning point in the U.S. economy. The survey data directly connects the downturn in the economy to an increase in domestic violence. Additionally, www.endabuse.org reports nearly one in four women in the United States reports experiencing violence by a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life.

"The economy is exacerbating domestic violence, and the demand for victim services is up," said Sue Else, president of the National Network to End Domestic Violence. "We applaud The Mary Kay Foundation for stepping up and making this significant investment in life-saving domestic violence services.
