Amway China Dances With The Dragons

Amway China Dances With The Dragons

Here's Eva Cheng, Amway China Chairwoman on doing business in China:

Planning to do business in China? Prepare to dance. Waltz, actually. You know: Step forward, step sideways, step back, repeat with a little spin.

Cheng should know. She helped guide the direct sales giant from 1998's government shutdown of direct selling in the country to bring in $3 billion of Amway's $8.4 billion in 2009 sales.

"In this waltz we took one step backwards," Cheng told hundreds of attending her a speech, "Dancing Between the Dragon and the Eagle," Wednesday for West Michigan's chapters of InForum and the World Affairs Council.

By breaking with tradition and opening retail stores in China to support local salespeople, "we also took two steps forward. We very boldly asked for the right to set up our own Amway shops in all of the provinces and cities where Amway operates."

That step in the dance reopened the door for the company, she said, which continued a rhythmic and, ultimately, profitable relationship full of whisks and turns.

Keeping that in mind, Cheng said Americans need to understand three key factors when looking at doing business in China:

* It's never easy because China is complex, volatile and often difficult to understand.

* Approaching the market only as a way to make money is a recipe for failure.

* Doing business will be far easier with an good understanding of cultural differences.

That's the way to long-term business prosperity, according to Eva Cheng, chairwoman of Amway China.

Mr. Amway Builds Brand In Thailand

Here's the latest Amway Thailand news:

The new top management of Amway (Thailand) will be officially announced in the near future, whose priority task will be not only to promote the Amway brand's image of quality but to sustain its reputation as the largest direct-selling company in the country.

Over the past two years, candidates for the top job have been processed by both the parent company in the United States and the regional office to ensure that the most qualified person is named.

So far, the heir apparent is Kittawat Ritteerawee, currently general manager. He was promoted as the company's No 2 last year to allow him to learn more management and leadership skills before taking the helm.

Amway (Thailand) is currently headed by managing director Preecha Prakobkit. The parent company extended his term for three years in 2009 and his tenure will end next year.

Preecha said Kittawat's most important priority if he is appointed to the No 1 position would be to sustain business growth. In addition, he had to proceed with building the brand, becoming the new "Mr Amway".

Amway Jet Evacuates Missionaries From Haiti Earthquake Zone

Amway Jet Evacuates Missionaries From Haiti Earthquake Zone

The Amway corporate jet carried a medical team and supplies to Haiti Monday on a flight of mercy. It returned with 10 Americans who were on a medical mission trip when the earthquake struck.

North Dakota nurse practitioner Sarah Kaspari Baker recalls, "I was holding the baby and grabbed the young mom. And it just rolled under our feet. It felt like being on a ship. The roar was amazing." She was working with a Haitian interpreter at the time, and says, "A young medical student whose university collapsed. And all his friends were killed. And he would have been there if he wouldn't have been on the island helping us."

The team worked on an island ten miles off the Haitian coast called La Gonave. The damage on the island was not as bad as the capitol. They still saw collapsed buildings and felt the fear that comes with a major quake. Team leader Bruce Blumer of Mitchell, South Dakota says, "Just beyond where the clinic was, there was a big open area. And it looked like it had snowed. There were probably 500 people lying on sheets because they were afraid to be in their homes that night."

Amway China Signs Deal With China Telecom

Amway China Signs Deal With China Telecom

Amway China signed a new agreement with China Telecom on Friday to provide its salespeople with 3G phones with special online product and sales functions.

The agreement, which was signed at Amway China's headquarters in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, will let eligible Amway salespeople obtain custom-made 3G smart phones with several functions especially designed for them. The functions include online shopping, sales queries, customer management and makeup simulation.

"No matter whether it is 3G smart phones or the web, they are just tools or vehicles that can assist our salesmen with selling the company's products," said Gan Chee Eng, President of Amway Greater China. "Quite unlike e-shops, our model is that our salesmen will still look for customers, although they can access information through tools like 3G phones or the internet, rather than have customers look for products on the internet on their own initiative."

Amway China has considered introducing e-commerce services in recent years. But Gan said that even if the company launched its own online shops, they would serve as yet another tool for its salespeople.

"We have promised that Amway China will not leave its salesmen," Gan said.

Amway Axes 93 Employees

Amway Axes 93 Employees

ADA TOWNSHIP, MICH. — Direct-selling giant Amway says it's eliminating 93 positions in the United States and Canada over the next 15 months due to a consolidation of its financial operations.

Amway Corp. said in a release issued Monday most of the jobs are finance-related and will be trimmed at its global headquarters in Ada, Mich., just east of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Amway says it hopes to eliminate as many positions as possible through attrition and early retirement, and by moving employees to open positions elsewhere in the company.

Its European operations also are being streamlined but the company says it won't have details about that until next year.
