Herbalife, a global nutrition and direct-selling company, announced today that the company will serve as the primary sponsor for the No. 99 Sam Schmidt Motorsports/Chip Ganassi Racing entry in the 2010 edition of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race driven by Herbalife-sponsored athlete Townsend Bell.
Bell, 34, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., comes back to the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" in the bright green HERBALIFE SSM/CGR Dallara Honda open-wheel car after recording a sensational charge at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway in finishing fourth behind the wheel of the Herbalife machine in the 2009 running of the world's biggest auto race.
"Bringing Herbalife on board for this year's Indy 500 is very exciting for our effort in 2010," said Schmidt, a three-time Indy Lights champion team owner. "A worldwide nutrition company such as Herbalife gives our SSM/CGR program a strong foundation to prepare a winning machine for Townsend. Again partnering with Chip's operation puts us in a position to qualify well and race for the ultimate motorsports prize, the Indianapolis 500. We have an excellent team led by Chris Griffis and I am very proud to enter a solid effort for the Indy 500."

Herbalife Opens Casa Herbalife Program in Ecuador
Posted on 11. Feb, 2010 by Dan Mitchell.
More good work from Herbalife...
The Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) announced the opening of a Casa Herbalife program in Ecuador's capital city of Quito. The initial grant will support the 2010 food budget for Fundacion Sinsoluka.
Fundacion Sinsoluka was founded over 15 years ago to help get homeless children and teens off the streets and out of a cycle of drug abuse and addiction. The organization's name expresses its mission -- "sin" meaning without and "soluka," the name of the readily-available, highly-addictive glue that is sniffed by many homeless children in Quito.
Sinsoluka provides a variety of social services that include counseling, domestic violence prevention, substance abuse treatment, tutoring, job readiness training, and nutrition education to more than 300 participants - children, homeless teens/young adults, and their respective family members.
Aside from a paid staffer who prepares meals, the organization functions entirely with unpaid volunteers, including Founder Dr. Mario Alberto Piedra, and has been operating out of a house that it has outgrown in recent years. In an unplanned and emotionally-charged announcement at an Herbalife event last weekend in Quito, Piedra learned that Herbalife independent Distributors, with additional support from HFF, had raised enough money to purchase a new, larger home to house the organization, in addition to the HFF nutrition grant.

Herbalife Herbal Products Linked To Toxic Liver Disease?

Here's an interesting article from Psychology Today by Dr. Paul D. Blanc, M.D., M.S.P.H.
A few months ago, I consulted on the medical case of a young man with an extremely low platelet blood cell count. The problem, which could have caused life-threatening bleeding, was suspected to be a medication side-effect. The patient had been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and recently started on a standard and widely-used medication for that condition. But the issue was not so straightforward. At the same time that the treating doctors prescribed the drug, the patient also began self-medicating with a Chinese, multi-herbal preparation.
A check of medical databases quickly revealed a strong connection between a Chinese five-herbal concoction called "Jui" and dangerously low platelet counts. But we had no idea what our patient's herbal mix contained and whether its ingredients overlapped with Jui. When we finally obtained a list of the multiple plant materials that made up the brew, we found that one of its twelve herbal ingredients indeed did overlap with Jui.
Both the prescription medicine and the herbal treatment were stopped immediately and the patient pulled back from the brink. We'll never be certain which substance was the culprit, because that would require deliberately giving one and then the other medication to see what would happen. That includes, unfortunately, a drug that would otherwise have been his treatment of choice.
This type of problem is made all the more complicated by the frequent use of multiple combinations of herbals and various other "natural" complimentary therapies taken together, rather than use of a single substance. Nor is this practice limited to traditional Eastern regimens. Beginning in 2007, a series of cases, first from Switzerland and Israel and later from in Spain and Argentina, all linked Herbalife products to liver disease consistent with toxic injury.
