Hello Geeks!
I would like to add a couple of phpBB forums to the MLM Blog Network of web sites (maybe more in the future).
I am looking for someone to do some minor design (add Google Adsense and Logos) and then ftp the phpBB package to a GoDaddy hosting account (unless you know of a better host).
I thought I would offer it here to my geeks before heading over to elance.
Peace!
Update: Based on some reader input and a little research, I think I am going to try Vanilla instead of phpBB. I am still looking for someone that would like to help get these sites up (two forums currently). Anyone interested can leave me a comment or email me at ty (at) tribble.org
Update II: I settled on punBB and so far so good. Check out MLMVox. I actually installed it myself, but I am still looking for help in adding mods.
DO NOT USE PHPBB. EVER.
It's one of the worst pieces of forum software out there because:
1. It's a bitch to add mods and upgrade and you MUST upgrade every month or so as they release critical security patches.
2. Because it's so popular every hacker in the world is trying to run scripts to break it. Same type of thing with Windows OS being so popular – more bang for a hacker's efforts.
You should use one of the following instead:
1. PunBB – http://www.punbb.org/ I haven't used this myself but it's got a great reputation.
2. Simple Machines – http://www.simplemachines.org/ I have used this one and it's great. A lot like phpBB but without the same problems.
3. Vanilla – http://getvanilla.com/ – This is a new type of forum software and it's pretty cool. If you don't like the new way of thinking about forums then don't use it but it's by far the simplest out there and easiest to use.
4. VBulletin – http://www.vbulletin.com/ – It isn't free but it's good. I haven't used but it's been highly recommended and if you look at popular websites, many use VBulletin as their official forums.
i agree with eric.
if you do wish to run any PHP, be sure to tell GoDaddy that you need your site hosted on a Linux server, b/c a Windows server doesn't run PHP. In addition, a Linux server won't run .ASP script, so be sure not to implement any of that.
Again, you have to conciously tell GoDaddy what format server you want because it is not a standard option. good luck.
